Tramadol is a centrally acting synthetic opioid analgesic with a dual mechanism: it binds to mu-opioid receptors and also inhibits the reuptake of norepinephrine and serotonin. This dual action makes it effective for moderate to moderately severe pain.
Tramadol is a Schedule IV controlled substance. It carries a lower risk of dependence compared to traditional opioids at standard doses but should be used cautiously in patients with a history of substance use disorder or seizures.
