Metoprolol succinate (Toprol-XL) is a cardioselective beta-1 blocker used for hypertension, angina, heart failure, and post-MI management. The extended-release formulation provides 24-hour blood pressure control with once-daily dosing.
By selectively blocking beta-1 adrenergic receptors, metoprolol reduces heart rate, myocardial contractility, and blood pressure without the bronchospasm risk of non-selective beta-blockers.
